Polar Probings: Sculpture by Gabriel Warren

Opening Reception: Thursday, October 13, 5:00 pm

Exhibit: October 13 through December 8, 2011

The Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery will present a number of works by artist Gabriel Warren in the Fine Arts Gallery at Cohen Memorial Hall. Warren, who was the first artist-in-residence in Antarctica, creates sculptures using natural ice formations as source material. His exhibit is being presented in conjunction with this year’s campus-wide initiative on sustainability with support from the Warren Center, the Department of English, the College of Arts and Science Dean’s Office, and the American Studies Sustainability Project. AEC Green Screen Presents: Gasland (2010)

Sunday, October 16, 2pm – 4pm, Sarratt Cinema

Gasland is an Oscar-nominated film about the dangerous and increasingly popular practice of removing natural gas from shale deposits (fracking). Spreading all across the United States with its epicenter in Pennsylvania, fracking is endangering small towns and individuals through its under-regulated practices. This event is free and open to the public.

Words and Woods Tree Tour

Wednesday, October 19th, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm
117 Alumni Hall

The leaves are turning. On October 19th, at 11:30 a.m., Biology Lecturer Steve Baskauf will lead a tour of the Vanderbilt Arboretum. Baskauf is the creator of Vanderbilt's online tree tour, as well as the creator of Bioimages, an interactive online ecology resource. The tree tour will leave from the Writing Studio at Alumni Hall, and it will be followed by a short writing exercise. Please join us for this special event.
Words and Woods is a series of writing workshops that explores the role of language and writing in relation to the natural world. Sessions involve local excursions, written reflection, and group discussion.

Van Jones, "Rebuild The American Dream: Green Jobs & Beyond"

Wednesday, October 19, Sarratt Cinema

Van Jones presents "Rebuild The American Dream: Green Jobs & Beyond" as the 2011-2012 Harry C. Howard Jr. Lecture Series. Van Jones is an award-winning activist and best-selling author in the area of the environment and jobs. He is currently a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and a senior policy advisor at Green for All. This event is sponsored by the Warren Center and the American Studies Sustainability Project, and will be held at 4:10 p.m. in the Sarratt Cinema. AEC Green Screen Presents: Crude (2010)

Sunday, October 23, 2pm to 4pm, Sarratt Cinema

Crude is a movie documenting an ongoing legal battle between a small village in Ecuador with the gas giant Chevron. A legal drama, the film acts as a David and Goliath story, in which individuals across the world wrangle with a corporate behemoth. This event is free and open to the public.
