Bill McKibben Lectures Next Week!!

The American Studies Sustainability Project kicks off with a lecture by Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature and Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet on Thursday, September 22, at 5:00 in Ingram Hall, Blair School of Music. His talk is titled Global and Local: Reports from the Fight for a Working Planet, and will be followed by a reception and book signing.

This educational series, sponsored by the Sustainability and Environmental Management Office (SEMO) and the American Studies Sustainability Project, features informal lunchtime discussions and/or workshops – from sustainable food and dining choices to backyard composting to utility savings at home and work and much more. So bring your lunch and join us to learn interesting ways to incorporate sustainability into your life!

Green Screen: The Last Mountain Nationwide Campus Skype Event

Wednesday, September 21, 7:00 p.m., Commons Multipurpose Room (Free)

The Last Mountain is a movie depicting the effects and controversy over mountain-top removal mining, a practice which involves destroying mountain faces to access coal deposits, causing environmental, health and ethical dilemmas. While focusing on the issue of coal mining, the movie also questions the larger problem of human energy consumption and creation.

American Studies Road Trip Series: Blue Gold: Water Rights and Wrongs

Join us for a tour of the Metro Nashville Water Treatment Plant at Whites Creek with Cecelia Tichi, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of English. Learn about Metro Nashville's efforts to treat waste water in a sustainable way.

OACS Eco Rolling Seminar 2011:  A Look at the Environment through the Lens of Mountain Top Removal

Fall Break: October 6- 8, 2011
Application deadline: 5pm, September 30

The Eco Rolling Seminar takes an in-depth look at the critical issue of the environment and energy through the lens of mountain top removal (mtr). Students will travel to Hindman, Kentucky in 3 vans. Accommodations are at the historic Hindman Settlement School, nestled in the Appalachian hills. The trip includes panel discussions, a tour of an active mountain top removal site by a coal company plus a bee hive reclamation site. You will wear beekeeper gear!  Expect to do some hiking!!

Discussions will be devoted to community activism, bio diversity, "Ecological philosophy" and the current state of energy and energy alternatives.

Cost of the seminar for all Vanderbilt Students is $75.00, $240 for Faculty. Registration includes meals, accommodations and transportation.
