| Abstract: | This is an exploration of the qualities of effective educators and the strategies they employ in the classroom. Through various classroom experiences as a student and as a teacher, I have pondered what it is that a truly influential, inspirational teacher does that makes a difference for her students. Within this paper, I include examples of personal experience and plans on how to incorporate these findings into my own classroom. I call upon and reference a variety of researchers and authors who have spent a great deal of time focusing on the various forms of effective educators. Investigations begin with a direct look into how teachers utilize learning theory principles within the classroom and how they influence their learners. Knowing the interests and preferences of the learners is essential for the development of their educational experience. From there, focus shifts to the learning environment the teacher develops. When students share responsibility and ownership of their classroom incredible experiences take shape. After the establishment of the classroom, the instruction and curriculum become the center of attention. Authentic learning opportunities and the utilization of various presentation methods create the foundation of effective knowledge building. Once the curriculum is set and instructional methods chosen, the decision-making turns to how the students will demonstrate their understanding of their individual learning experiences. As has been the theme throughout my education at Peabody, students must receive the freedom of choice in how they transfer and apply their newly acquired knowledge. The core of an effective educator’s classroom does not center on the relay of information from teacher to student—it is the formulation of a mutually created learning experience, flexible but ever meaningful. |
