dc.descriptionFinding aid for a collection. Collection description: A handwritten diary kept from 1861 to 1865, a transcript of the diary, and a published book, History of the Fifty-Eight Regiment of Indiana Volunteer Infantry, by John J. Hight (1895). The diary describes military life and various Civil War campaigns, such as Chattanooga, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain and Atlanta. William R. McMahan was born in 1843 in Indiana. He enlisted as a private for service in the 58th Volunteer Infantry on Sept. 10, 1861. At war's end he was discharged as a first lieutenant. He studied medicine and in 1868 graduated from Rush Medical College of Chicago. He was a faculty member of Evansville Medical College from 1882-1884.en_US
