Title: Teaching Elementary Mathematics With Children's Literature
Author: Cook, Justine
Abstract: The goal of this paper is to investigate and evaluate children’s literature in terms of its use within mathematics curriculum. I have laid out criteria for assessing literature to be used in mathematics, as well as provided an annotated bibliography of effective children’s literature to aid in mathematics learning using this criteria. I have also laid out how the use of children’s literature to teach mathematics aids in the learning environment and assessment, connecting these to the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards for Teaching Mathematics. Overall, this paper provides a guide for incorporating mathematical literature into the mathematics classroom.
