There is something disquieting about the way that Juan José Millás furnishes his fictions. His
narratives, most often not altogether unreal or fantastic, take place compulsively in enclosed
locales populated by a set of objects and articles of furniture much more scarce and schematic
than those of the classic realist novel, but certainly endowed with rather peculiar qualities.
Millás’ novelistic furniture boasts a surprisingly organic condition, is suspect of thought and
conscience, develops a high degree of autonomous agency, becomes an antagonist or accomplice
of the human characters, and magically transcends or betrays its usual functions. The object of
the study is to reflect upon the peculiar workings of these pieces of furniture in Millás’ texts and
to inquire into the causes and origins of this obsessive mobiliary adventure. |
