| Description: | Finding aid for a collection. Collection description: A collection of manuscripts by contemporary poets, collected by Lawrence S. Thompson. The collection also includes the original list of poets solicited and a copy of the letter sent by Thompson to the poets. Most or all of the poems are in English and most or all of the poets are American or English. Lawrence S. Thompson of the University of Kentucky Library initiated the Kentucky Poetry Project in 1964. For an exhibit, he solicited manuscripts from over 600 poets, and most responded. The collection of manuscripts was brought to Vanderbilt University by Deanna Marcum, a Vanderbilt librarian, and given to Special Collections in 1975. The Vanderbilt English Department assisted in paring the collection down to an assortment of 135 contributions from especially prominent poets. |
