Abstract: Watch video of the School of Engineering’s Hall Lecture, given by the Deputy Laboratory Director for Science and Technology at Oak Ridge National Laboratory Thomas Zacharia Jan. 14, 2010. Zacharia says high-performance computing will provide solutions to the research and development challenges that must be overcome in order to address new energy solutions. Zacharia’s lecture title is “Advanced Computing for a Clean Energy Future.” ORNL is home to a world-leading petascale computer – the Cray XT5 Jaguar – with capabilities that were beyond imagination until recently. The machine makes it possible to address some of the most challenging scientific problems in areas such as climate modeling and renewable energy. In November 2009, Jaguar was named #1 on the Top500 list of the world’s most powerful computers.
